Dear Mr. Lee,

I am writing to give you a status update on your graduate
school application. You should by now have received a letter indicating
that we have submitted your application for a University Fellowship but also
indicating that if you fail to win a fellowship an offer for a graduate
research associateship. On the afternoon of Monday, March 12, we will hear
the results of the fellowship competition. On Tuesday, the Nuclear
Engineering faculty will meet to review the results of the fellowship
competition and make decisions regarding to whom to offer graduate research
associateships. As I indicated, in your case the faculty has previously
decided to offer you the graduate research associateship in the event you
fail to be awarded a fellowship. The graduate research associateship has a
stipend of $1350 per month and also covers your tuition and fees. The only
significant difference to you between a fellowship and an associateship is
that the associateship requires a 20 hour commitment per week to work on a
research project. I will be travelling from March 11 to March 24. I have
asked Grace Hines to notify you by E-mail regarding the outcome of the
fellowship competition. We will also try to keep you informed regarding
when you can expect to receive official paperwork from the university.

I would like to express our high interest in your joining the nuclear
engineering program at Ohio State University. We do not currently have any
other Korean students, but by chance we will have two visiting professors
from Korean universities working with our faculty in Columbus next year.
Approximately half of our nuclear engineering students are from foreign
countries, with a number from other Asian countries. The Ohio State
University campus is very large (approximately 50,000 students) and provides
excellent support to our large population of foreign students. Although it
is always difficult (but interesting) to enter a foreign environment, I
believe that you could quickly feel at home here. Columbus offers the
cultural advantages of a large city but the cost of living in Ohio is much
lower than on the east coast or west coast. Students don’t live like kings
on the stipend that we provide but they do live much more comfortably than
students in cities like Boston, Massachusetts or Berkeley, California. If
we can be of additional help to you in making your decision where to go to
graduate school, please send me an E-mail.
