Build me a son, O Lord,<\/p>\n
who will be strong enough to know when he is weak;
\nand brave enough to face himself when he is afraid;
\none who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat,
\nand humble and gentle in victory. <\/p>\n
Build me a son
\nwhose wishes will not take the place of deeds;
\na son who will know Thee –
\nand that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge. <\/p>\n
Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort,
\nbut under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.
\nHere let him learn to stand up in the storm;
\nhere let him learn compassion for those who fail. <\/p>\n
Build me a son
\nwhose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high,
\na son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men,
\none who will reach into the future,
\nyet never forget the past. <\/p>\n
And after all these things are his, add, I pray,
\nenough of a sense of humor,
\nso that he may always be serious,
\nyet never take himself too seriously.
\nGive him humility,
\nso that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness,
\nthe open mind of true wisdom,
\nand the meekness of true strength. <\/p>\n
